Peter Smith, the University of Colorado student who threw glitter at Mitt Romney Tuesday, has been detained and faces misdemeanor charges for throwing a missile, creating a disturbance, and committing an unlawful act on school property. If convicted, he could face up to six months in jail and a $1,000 fine. While protesters have traditionally thrown glitter on candidates who oppose gay marriage, Smith said he “glitter bombed” Romney because of his “general political philosophy.” Almost all of the major Republican presidential contenders have been hit with glitter, an act for which Mike Huckabee once declared, “People ought to be arrested.” It’s unclear whether any previous glitter bombers have been reprimanded.
