Mo'Nique Wins Best Supporting Actress

Mo’Nique took home the first award of the evening as Best Supporting Actress for her portrayal as Mary Jones, the villainous Welfare mother of the title character in Precious. In a dress as gold as her new statuette, the actress gave a powerful speech, thanking the film's director, Lee Daniels, castmate Gabby Sidibe, and husband, as well as those who can relate to the dark plot of the film. “I celebrate this award with every person that’s ever been touched,” she said in closing. “It’s now time to tell. And it’s OK.”

Meryl Streep Wins Best Actress

Though Hollywood already knows not to mess with Meryl Streep, the beloved actress confirmed dominance when she beat herself and three other nominees in the Best Actress in a Comedy or Musical category for her portrayal as Julia Child in Julie & Julia. Joking that she wanted to change her name to T-Bone (after music producer T-Bone Burnett, who won the Globe for best song earlier in the evening), Streep had the audience laughing before her speech became heartfelt. “I just want to say that in my long career, I’ve played so many extraordinary woman that I’m getting mistaken for one,” she said modestly.

Mad Men Named Best Television Drama

Mad Men proved as addicting to the Hollywood Foreign Press as the cigarettes the Sterling Cooper execs smoke each Sunday night. The AMC series took home the award for Best Television Drama Sunday night for the third year in a row. Despite his previous honors, show creator Matthew Weiner seemed genuinely surprised. “Television is amazing right now,” he told the audience. “To be in the lineup with these shows—my TiVo is burned out.”

Drew Barrymore Wins Best Actress in a Mini-Series

As she took the stage to accept her award for Best Actress in a mini-series for her role in Grey Gardens, Drew Barrymore joked: “I’ve been meeting with the Hollywood Foreign Press for 97 years.” But twice-nominated Barrymore, who sparkled in a champagne silk Atelier Versace gown, had never before won. She admitted: “I didn’t know the etiquette for winning these awards.”

De Niro and DiCaprio Honor Scorsese

Two of Martin Scorsese’s closest friends and colleagues, Robert De Niro and Leonardo DiCaprio, presented the director with the Cecil B. DeMille Award Sunday night. De Niro playfully described Scorsese in his humorous introduction: “Marty eats, drinks and sleeps film,” he told the audience. “I hear there are even videos on the Internet of Marty having sex with film.” The moviemaker smiled before taking the stage to accept the award from De Niro and DiCaprio, whom he called “two great actors, two great friends and two great collaborators."

Representing Golden Globe-nominated Glee, Jayma Mays chose a strapless black-and-white Badgley Mischka dress and vintage Fred Leighton jewels. First-time attendee and nominee Lea Michele also went black in an Oscar de la Renta mermaid gown, which she paired with emerald tear-drop Chopard earrings. “This isn’t real to me,” she said of the experience. “I used to sit at home with Mom and we would get dressed up and pretend we were at the Golden Globes.” Fellow costar and nominee Jane Lynch glowed in an olive Ali Rahimi halter and Doyle & Doyle jewelry. Dianna Agron floated down the red carpet in a cascading silver gown.
