At least they didn’t leave it at a bar? When hackers raided Google computers in January, it seems they made off with the password system that controls access to nearly all of Google’s Web services for millions of users. The software allowed users to sign in to just one Google application, like Gmail or Google Calendar, to operate all of them. Precisely what they had stolen was a mystery until now, according to The New York Times. Though the hackers do not seem to have used it to find people’s passwords, the theft is significant because it revealed several weaknesses in the Google system, especially as it pushes for increasing reliance on “cloud” computing—where large quantities of information are contained in a small cluster of computers.
