Google marketing executive and Egyptian protest organizer Wael Ghonim told Katie Couric last week that he’d go back to Google if he wasn’t fired. It looks he won’t have to worry about that. “We're incredibly proud of you, @Ghonim, & of course will welcome you back when you're ready,” tweeted Google. Google didn’t know anything about Ghonim’s involvement when he went to Egypt for the protests, says Ghonim, and when his role became public they suggested he take a leave of absence. Between Ghonim and the Google engineers who developed a hack to let protesters use Twitter through phone lines, the company has gotten good press during the Egyptian revolution, but some analysts say they should be careful lest governments start shutting them out.
