The Federal Highway Administration is coming under fire on Friday after it cleared highway guardrails made by a company that did not disclose design changes. Some had argued that the guardrails, made by Trinity Industries in Dallas, jammed when hit head-on and that the rail would spear the passenger compartment. As a result, some states have temporarily banned the guardrail, and Virginia is planning to remove ones already in place. Critics of the FHA’s tests pointed out that in the final eighth test, the driver’s door was severely damaged, and the agency used older, less thorough methods.
