Activists boat "Audacity of Hope" is escorted by the Greek coast guard ship in town of Peramat, near Athens, Greece, Friday, July 1, 2011. Greece on Friday banned ships heading to the Gaza Strip from leaving Greek ports, and a vessel carrying several dozen American protesters which left port without permission was ordered to return.

Greek authorities on Saturday arrested the American captain of a boat in the flotilla that had planned to set sail for Gaza in protest of the Israeli naval blockade. A judge said that the boat, The Audacity of Hope, was not carrying proper safety equipment and charged captain John Klusmire with a felony, for allegedly "disturbing sea traffic and endangering passengers.” After waiting a week for authorization, the flotilla had decided to set sail without it, but after 20 minutes the American boat was stopped and escorted back.
