Greece Proceeds on Austerity

Greece’s Parliament was apparently unfazed by the massive demonstrations gripping the country. It took the first step toward passing an unpopular austerity measure, approving a bill in principle that would result in the temporary layoffs of 30,000 public-sector workers and further cuts to pensions and salaries. Earlier, between 80,000 and 100,000 Greeks marched in the streets for the beginning of a two-day general strike called by the country’s two major labor unions. Athens police say 38 officers and three demonstrators were hurt in clashes, which included the throwing of bricks and petrol bombs. Police responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
