To mark its 50th Anniversary, New York's Guggenheim Museum held a month-long contest tied to its exhibition Contemplating the Void: Interventions in the Guggenheim. The task: to re-envision the storied Guggenheim rotunda, one of the most famous art spaces in the world—and a work of art in and of itself. Of the 200-plus renderings, five were selected as winners by Contemplating the Void's curators. The winning ideas include filling the rotunda with sand to turn it into an hourglass of sorts, planting a field of sunflowers on the rotunda's uppermost level, and "conditioning" the air in the rotunda to create a vertical wind tunnel.
