Punished by a virulent cholera outbreak only 10 months after a devastating earthquake, some crowds in Haiti are taking out their anger at U.N. bases. Protesters, believing U.N. peacekeepers from Nepal to be the root cause of the outbreak, attacked a base in the country’s second-largest city en masse, throwing stones and setting a fire. U.N. troops and Haitian police responded with tear gas and projectiles to disperse the crowd. Since the outbreak, cholera—which has never before been documented in Haiti, but has been spreading quickly due to unsanitary conditions—has killed at least 1,000 people.
