Heavy Fighting Reported in Damascus

Blood was shed in the streets of Syria’s capital Sunday, activists reported. “There is the sound of heavy gunfire,” an activist in the city told Reuters. “And there is smoke rising from the area.” People in the city told Reuters that Sunday’s fighting was the most brutal daytime violence yet seen in the capital, one of the first times that heavy clashes have spread into Damascus. Rockets were used by government forces in the city Sunday, said the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, and at least 80 people died.
