Home Depot announced Thursday that a total of 56 million debit and credit cards were affected by a months-long data breach, far surpassing the hack of Target in 2013. According to Home Depot, the malware has been deleted and the chain claims there is no proof that pin numbers were compromised. The company also announced it has undergone a significant payment security upgrade. Target, which saw 40 million credit and debit cards compromised, saw its sales and profits fall when customers were put off by the data breach. The largest theft of credit and debit card information is still that of TJX Company in 2007, which affected 90 million records.
