The House Intelligence Committee issued a subpoena threat to the White House on Thursday over any recordings of conversations between President Trump and former FBI Director James Comey. After suggesting that he had taped his conversations with Comey, Trump admitted earlier this month that he does not have any recordings of their discussions. But in a letter to the White House, GOP Rep. Mike Conaway and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff, the chairman and ranking member of the committee, said the administration was only “partially responsive” to the committee’s request for information about the recordings. The White House sent a short letter to the committee referring lawmakers to Trump’s tweets on the matter. “By only referring to the President’s statement, the White House’s letter stops short of clarifying for the Committee whether the White House has any responsive recordings, memoranda, or other documents,” Conaway and Schiff wrote, adding that they would “consider using compulsory process to ensure a satisfactory response.”
