A suburban Indianapolis police officer was fatally shot Thursday while trying to help victims of a car crash. Lt. Aaron Allan, a six-year veteran of the Southport Police Department, had arrived at the scene of a crash where people were trapped inside an overturned vehicle when the driver of the vehicle shot him repeatedly. A witness cited by The Indy Channel said the driver fired more than a dozen shots as Allan approached the car. Two other officers at the scene returned fire, wounding the alleged shooter. He and another passenger in the vehicle were taken into police custody and treated for non-life-threatening injuries. It was not immediately clear what the shooter’s motive was.
