Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has called for an investigation into this week’s chemical attack in Syria and reiterated criticism of the U.S. military’s airstrikes on a Syrian air field. “We are asking for an impartial international fact-finding body to be set up... to find out where these chemical weapons came from,” Rouhani said Saturday, according to Reuters. Tehran, a major ally of Syrian President Bashar Assad, was one of the first countries to condemn U.S. airstrikes against Syria carried out in response to the chemical attack in Idlib province. In comments posted on Twitter late Friday, Rouhani called the chemical attack, which killed dozens of civilians, “horrifying.” But the U.S. airstrikes on Thursday didn’t help matters, he said, warning that “U.S. aggression against Shayrat (air base) strengthens regional extremism and terror, and global lawlessness and instability, and must be condemned.”
