The explosion at an Iranian military base several weeks ago that killed 17 soldiers appears to have been much worse than Iranian authorities suggested, according to satellite images analyzed by the Institute for Science and International Security. The Iranian government declared the blast an accident and refused to release images, despite growing tensions with the West over the country’s missile and nuclear programs. The military’s chief of staff said the explosion occurred when researchers were developing weapons that could potentially give Israel a “strong punch in the mouth,” but that the accident would delay their work by only “a few days.” But his description doesn’t fit with the satellite images of the site’s destruction.
