An Italian appeals court upheld a 16-year prison sentence for the captain of the Costa Concordia cruise ship. The vessel crashed into large rocks off the coast of a Tuscan island in 2012 in a shipwreck that killed 32 people. Francesco Schettino was convicted last year of 32 counts of manslaughter, along with abandoning his ship. In the most recent appeals trial, prosecutors wanted the sentence increased to more than 27 years, while Schettino’s legal team wanted an acquittal.
