Dr. Jack Kevorkian, the pathologist who championed assisted suicide, died this morning at the age of 83. He had been hospitalized for kidney and heart problems for the last two weeks. Kevorkian's lawyer, who was with the doctor when he died, says his death was peaceful and painless. Kevorkian's niece was also present. The Michigan doctor is believed to have assisted in 130 suicides. In 1999 he was convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to 10-25 years in prison, but he was released in 2007.
