John Goodman has been known to play some big roles, but some suggest his shocking new physique will change the Hollywood niche the hefty actor has carved for himself. The man best known for his roles in Roseanne and as a frequent Saturday Night Live host showed up at the AFI Lifetime Achievement tribute to director Mike Nichols on Thursday night looking thinner than ever. Monsters and Critics figures the 57-year-old comedian lost 100 pounds, but Goodman’s rep was unable to confirm. USA Today did report, however, that the actor lost the weight by revamping his “diet and exercise.” For Goodman, who is currently starring in the HBO series Treme, size has played an important role in his public image. “For almost all his life, he has also been overweight, and his acting draws on both the genuine status that comes with being big, and the stigma that comes with being fat,” The New York Times said in 1991. “While Goodman is far more of a big man than a fat one, he's always seen it the other way around.
