The original Congressional Medal of Honor that Joshua Chamberlain received for his valor at Little Round Top was found pressed inside a book at a church sale in Duxbury, Massachusetts. Chamberlain defended Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg, at one point leading a charge against Confederate soldiers and turning the tide of the battle. His medal was passed down from generation to generation, but when his granddaughter died in 2000, her belongings were donated to a church in Duxbury. Later someone bought several books at the church’s fundraising sale, found the medal, and anonymously mailed it to the Pejepscot Historical Society.
