Friday marks the premiere of Breaking Dawn: Part 2, the final film installment of the Twilight franchise. It will be a sad day for avid fans of the franchise; the end of the road (for now, at least) for Bella Swan and Edward Cullen. But for Kristen Stewart, its star, the end of the Twilight years feels a bit like high-school graduation. And look how far she’s come: to think that, just a decade ago, she wore black orthopedic shoes on the red carpet of Panic Room. Now, Stewart is the face of Balenciaga—turned out on the red carpet in a look straight from the fashion house’s spring runway. She’s recently rekindled her romance with Robert Pattinson and, well, has never looked this good.

Get Thee to a Nunnery

At the premiere of Panic Room in 2002, 11-year-old Stewart celebrated her first major role by donning an all-black outfit consisting of a loose, mid-calf dress, flat lace-up shoes, and a casual trench.

Leave-Me-Alone Chic

In 2003, Stewart looked markedly different from just a year earlier. She wore longer hair, bootcut jeans, a belly-baring CBGB tank top, and—because no early-aughties look would be complete without them—Uggs.

Fifteen-year-old Stewart shows off a softer style in 2005 at the Tribeca Film Festival. She wore  a tailored blazer, pleated cream skirt, ballet flats, and fitted tee.

Luck Be a Lady

Stewart appeared grown up for the first time in 2007, at the L.A. premiere of Into the Wild. With smoky eyes and blonde hair in a sophisticated updo, Stewart smartly paired a 2006 fall Rodarte chiffon dress with burgundy pumps.

Black Becomes Her

One month after the first Twilight film wrapped, Stewart appeared at the 2008 MTV Movie Awards in a modern look—complete with cropped black cigarette cargo pants, a fitted black tank, patent stilettos, and matching jet-black hair.

Let the Craze Begin

Then-18-year-old Stewart posed with future beau Robert Pattinson at the 2008 MTV Video Music Awards in a Phillip Lim mini-dress. The press tour kicked off a fashion-forward frenzy for Stewart, who subsequently wore dresses by Temperley London, La Perla, and DKNY.

Those Trademark Converse

Forever thumbing her nose at tradition, Stewart has trademarked the Converse-with-dresses look. At the 2009 MTV Movie Awards, Kristen paired a Yigal Azrouël dress with beat-up sneakers. Only this week did she elaborate on her go-to footwear. Wearing flats, she says, helps her sign more autographs when she attends premieres. And that many actresses are “more concerned about looking pretty in your heels, and so you’re walking slowly down the line. Put a pair of sneakers on.”

The Punk Phase

At the 2009 Teen Choice Awards, she wore a Rock & Republic mini-dress with a spiky skirt and deep V-neck, along with a pair of peep-toe ankle boots by Jerome C. Rousseau. Combined with her mullet cut (in the process of growing out) from her role as Joan Jett in The Runaways, Stewart stands out from the rest of the crowd.

Pin-Up Girl

At the 2011 MTV Movie Awards, Stewart rocked a red micro-mini-dress by Balmain—covered in safety pins and sequins. MTV Style reported on her look, referring to Stewart as a pro “when it comes to complementing hard edges with sophisticated silhouettes.”

The Breakup Blues

After news broke that she had cheated on Robert Pattinson with Rupert Sanders, Stewart wore her heart on her sleeve—or rather, shirt. She apologetically wore Rob’s oversized T-shirt with a maroon Balenciaga quilted leather biker jacket through the LAX airport.

A Feminine Return

Stewart wore a fitted, long-sleeved Zuhair Murad dress to the Toronto Film Festival in 2012 to promote On the Road. The elaborate dress, complete with sequin flowers decorating the sleeves and suggestively sheer upper bodice and lace skirt, was worn only days after Balenciaga announced her as the face of the Spanish fashion house.

Back in Business

With rumors flying that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have recently gotten back together, the actress showed up on The Tonight Show With Jay Leno in a bright patterned dress by British designer Peter Pilotto. Though she has refused any discussion of her private romantic life, her suddenly colorful wardrobe and giant smile speak volumes.

Fresh Off the Runway

Just a few weeks ago, this look was coming down the Balenciaga runway as Stewart watched. But she looked stunning in the two-piece pant and top at the AFI premiere of On the Road in Los Angeles last week (which, for the record, earned her a spot on our coveted Best Dressed list).
