Hawaiian officials have warned the island beach community of Kaohe of a possible overflow of lava into their homes. Lava has been flowing from a vent since June 27 and is days away from potentially crossing a highway into the community. Residents have been warned to avoid potential smoke exposure and low levels of sulfure dioxide from the lava, while Gov. Neil Abercrombie signed an emergency proclamation on Friday aimed at easing evacuation efforts. As of Thursday, the lava was about 0.8 mile from Kaohe.
