Nominations for the 59th annual Grammy Awards will be announced Tuesday, December 6th. The awards show itself is scheduled for January 12, 2017 and set to be hosted by James Corden.
The nominations will be released in two waves, with the noms for ‘Record of the Year,’ ‘Album of the Year,’ ‘Song of the Year,’ and ‘Best New Artist’ announced by 2015 ‘Best New Artist’ winner Meghan Trainor on “CBS This Morning” at 8:30 am EST.
The remaining nominations for all 84 categories will be posted on the Recording Academy’s website after Trainor’s announcement. Balloting for the awards will continue through mid-January of next year.
Expected contenders for the ‘Album of the Year’ are Adele’s 25, Beyoncé’s Lemonade, and David Bowie’s Blackstar— released just two days before his death. Other contenders include Drake for his album Views, Sia for Cheap Thrills, and Justin Bieber for Sorry.
Bieber, Beyoncé, Adele, and Drake will likely walk away with more than one nomination- based on both the popularity of their albums and singles, as well as their multiple nominations at the VMAs and other music awards this year.
Also notable, the Recording Academy—who oversees the Grammys—announced in June that streaming-only music could be nominated for awards. This change means artists like Chance the Rapper, whose streaming-album Coloring Book was the first to make the Billboard 200, is eligible.
Unfortunately, the cut off date for the 2017 Grammys—music must have been commercially released between October 1, 2015 and September 30, 2016—means that some major album releases, such as Lady Gaga’s Joanne, The Weeknd’s Starboy, and Bruno Mars’ 24K Magic, won’t be under consideration.
Regardless of who’s nominated and who receives multiple nods, the 2017 promises to be the award show’s biggest production yet.
So tune in Tuesday morning at 8:30 am EST to see Meghan Trainor announce the big-name nominees and then GRAMMY.com for the complete list.
