Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos A. Giménez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal requests on detaining undocumented immigrants, fearing the loss of federal dollars for defying executive orders. President Donald Trump on Wednesday signed an executive order threatening to cut federal grant dollars to counties or cities that don’t fully comply with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement policies. Miami-Dade has maintained so-called “sanctuary” status since 2013, refusing to indefinitely detain undocumented immigrants in the county. “In light of the provisions of the Executive Order, I direct you and your staff to honor all immigration detainer requests received from the Department of Homeland Security,” Giménez wrote in his new request.
