Donald Trump’s running mate, Indiana Governor Mike Pence, declined to take the bait Thursday evening when PBS NewsHour’s Judy Woodruff asked him to respond to Ted Cruz’s speech at the RNC the night before, during which he urged Republicans to “vote their conscience,” but did not endorse the party’s nominee. “Senator Ted Cruz is my friend, and I’m glad he came to the Republican National Convention,” Pence remarked. He said he understands that primaries can get “a little bit rough” and it “takes some time” for people to get over losing. “But I really appreciate the fact that he came and he congratulated Donald Trump for winning the Republican nomination,” Pence continued, “and that he expressed support for our shared conservative values.” Earlier in the day, Trump tweeted of Cruz and other candidates who have not endorsed him, “Other than a small group of people who have suffered massive and embarrassing losses, the party is VERY united.”
