More than 100 militants stormed a security checkpoint in South Waziristan, killing at least eight soldiers. At least 12 insurgents were also killed in the overnight gun battle. The militants, who some reports say were from the Taliban, attacked the checkpoint with rockets and heavy weapons shortly after midnight Thursday. Security forces responded to the assault and fought for at least three hours. It’s the largest attack by militants in several months, and it comes amid rumors that the Pakistani government is preparing for an offensive in Waziristan, the semi-autonomous tribal region that’s home to several militant groups.
