Banks in Britain have been quietly moving millions of banknotes north of the border in case there’s a surge in demand by Scots wanting to withdraw cash in the event Scotland votes for independence in Thursday’s referendum, The Independent reports. The moves have been occurring over the past week or so to make sure ATMs do not run out of cash on Friday—just in case people react in panic to a “yes” vote. There has been speculation some people will want to transfer their money to English banks if the electorate chooses to go it alone—even though the Bank of England has said it will stand behind all accounts for at least 18 months if the vote is yes.
