More women than men got Ph.D.s in the U.S. last year, the first time such a switch has happened. Women have become an increasingly large portion of the student body at America’s universities, where undergrad and graduate enrollees outnumber men 3-to-2. Doctoral degrees show long-term change, as they take about seven years to complete; female undergrad numbers began to equal male ones in the early '80s. Now, the male students are so rare at liberal arts colleges that federal officials are investigating whether some schools are favoring men during admissions to keep the sexes balanced on campus.
