The shooting death of print-shop operator Ron Lane at North Carolina’s Wayne Community College is being investigated as a hate crime, police say, though they didn’t specify what type of hate crime it may have been. The suspect, Kenneth Stancil III, was arrested in Daytona Beach, Florida, early Tuesday morning. Lane, who was openly gay, is believed to have fired Stancil shortly before the attack. Stancil’s mother suggested there may have been a more complex motive, claiming that Lane “made inappropriate sexual advances” toward her son, who may have had links to white-supremacist groups. Stancil said in court that his victim was a child molester.
