New Yorkers woke up Sunday morning to something they have rarely experienced in the last 200 years: a hurricane. Irene is moving toward New York City and is expected to make another landfall on Long Island, hitting the area the hardest at around 8 a.m. Hours before the storm's center was to reach the city, a 58-mph wind gust hit JFK Airport, and a storm surge of more than 3.5 feet was reported in New York Harbor. The city has all but shut down, and rains have lashed the area all night. Winds have the force to drive walls of water over the Rockaway beaches and between skyscrapers in Manhattan. All bridges and tunnels remained open, with the exception of the lower level of the George Washington Bridge because of high winds.
