A New First Beauty Test
The First Presidential Beauty Contest won't be in New Hampshire or Iowa but in Minneapolis, Tucson and more than a dozen smaller cities holding local elections this Nov. 7. City Vote--the brainchild of Democrat Larry Agran, former mayor of Irvine, Calif., and a '92 presidential candidate--aims to draw attention to urban issues by putting presidential candidates from both parties on local ballots where no convention delegates are at stake. Debates on of-ten-neglected urban and suburban issues begin in October, with major candidates expected to participate. Main attraction: Walter Cronkite, who may moderate. Says Cronkite: "Every effort must be made to expose the candidates' positions--especially on America's urban problems."
