Cracow

THE 1,000-year-old capital of medieval Poland is one of the best-preserved and culturally richest cities in Europe today. Its winding streets and spacious Renaissance squares are home to a lively mix of traditional townspeople and students from the renowned Jagiellonian University.

Visit the Royal Castle and Cathedral overlooking the city on Wawel Hill. Its Romanesque crypt and Renaissance Palace Chambers served the kings of Poland as well as German Governor Hans Frank during World War II.

Stroll the medieval streets of Kazimierz (Kuzmir in Yiddish), the trendy Jewish neighborhood where numerous bars and restaurants have popped up to accommodate the young crowd.

Shop for hand-knitted tablecloths and high-quality pottery in the Renaissance Sukiennice, Cracow's market hall.

Eat delicious wild boar pâté at Pod Baranem, a traditional restaurant that hasn't become a tourist trap. Don't skip the customary glass of Polish vodka.

Unwind in Folia, a concept club in the city's main square where students and artists attend musical and artistic performances each evening (foliaclub.pl).
