Here’s what is known: At about 12:35 a.m. on July 20, alleged gunman James Holmes walked in through the front-exit door of Theater 9 at Aurora, Colo.’s Century Cinema. The shooter was clad in head-to-toe protective Kevlar gear, a ballistics helmet, and a gas mask. He was carrying an AR-15 assault rifle, a Remington shotgun, a .40-caliber Glock handgun, and 6,000 rounds of ammunition, according to police reports.

 

Eyewitnesses say Holmes stood in front of the screen for about 10 seconds before throwing two smoke canisters into the theater. Then he opened fire. Three men, Jon Blunk, Alexander Teves and Matt McQuinn, were killed while protecting their girlfriends. The youngest victim was six years old; the oldest, 51. By 12:45 a.m., Holmes was in custody.
