FBI search a house in Bridgeport, Conn. where Faisal Shahzad lived.
Federal and local authorities arrested Faisal Shahzad, a 30-year-old American citizen of Pakistani origin, shortly after midnight Tuesday in connection with the attempted car bombing Saturday night in New York's Times Square. Attorney General Eric Holder, in an early morning news conference, said Shahzad was nabbed as he attempted to board a flight out of the country at New York's JFK airport.
Holder said Shahzad was trying to get on a flight to the Persian Gulf emirate of Dubai. But another senior U.S. official close to the investigation, who spoke on condition of anonymity, indicated Shahzad's ultimate destination was Pakistan. This official indicated that Shahzad would have taken a connecting flight from Dubai to Pakistan.
At a 1:30 a.m. ET press conference at Justice Department headquarters, Holder offered little additional information about the case, and said the investigation was continuing. He said: "Since this plot was first uncovered on Saturday night, the FBI, prosecutors, and intelligence lawyers in the National Security Division of the Justice Department and the U.S. Attorney's Offices in Manhattan and Connecticut, along with the NYPD, have worked night and day to find out who was responsible for what would have been a deadly attack had it been successful. Over the course of the day today, we have gathered significant additional evidence that led to tonight’s arrest, which was made by agents from Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection."
Holder declined to take any questions.
Earlier, a second law-enforcement official had indicated to Declassified that investigators were moving in on a possible suspect in the bombing probe, but that they were afraid information leaks might tip off the individual that he was under investigation. With ABC News either first or among the first, several news organizations, including the New York Daily News and The New York Times, reported Monday night that the suspect was an American citizen of Pakistani descent who recently had spent some time in Pakistan.
