Exclusive: Obama Interviewed Elena Kagan for Supreme Court on Friday

NEWSWEEK has learned that President Obama interviewedSolicitor General Elena Kagan at the White House on Friday for the open seat on the Supreme Courtcreated by Justice John Paul Stevens's impending retirement. Two senior WhiteHouse officials confirmed Kagan's visit to NEWSWEEK.
Kagan was interviewed last year for the position that ultimately wentto Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Kagan, a former dean of Harvard Law Schoolwho is seen as easily confirmable due to her warm relations withconservative colleagues at Harvard, is considered a leading contenderfor the current vacancy. Judge Merrick Garland and Judge Sidney Thomas are the other candidates known to have been interviewed by Obama thus far.
