Arizona Mocks Washington With Muppets

It’s been a long week of criticism in Washington. Criticism, that is, of Arizona’s controversial immigration law. President Obama has taken several high-profile swings at the measure, calling it "misguided" and then “misdirected" this week at a presser with Mexican President Felipe Calderón. That was after Attorney General Eric Holder claimed the statute was not “a good idea” and Homeland Security chief Janet Napolitano called it “a bad law-enforcement law.”

Add it all up and it’s not what you'd call good PR for Arizona, which has seen its tourism numbers dive and has been hit with several boycotts, the most significant from the city of Los Angeles on all official business. So what do you do when everyone on the playground is talking smack about you? You either go home and cry, or you fight back. And any state that has a senator suddenly interested in building a “ danged fence” to keep the illegals where they belong can probably be expected to choose the latter. And how.

Jan Brewer, the Grand Canyon State’s governor, has enlisted Sarah Palin to help hit back. Their latest effort? A YouTube ad that is, in a word, um, interesting. Rather than fight about the merits of the law, Brewer’s frustration seems to be that none of the senior administration officials who have publicly criticized the state have actually read the 10-page bill. And if they haven’t read it, then they’re not credible to criticize it.

So how to convey that? Cue the Muppets, and the bouncing ball. Oh . . . snap.
