Greenest Schools

Concerned about climate change and environmental degradation, colleges are working to reduce their impacts. Newsweek ranks the schools that are doing the most.

Methodology: In ranking the greenest colleges, we wanted to capture commitment to sustainability and environmental footprint, as well as student opinion. We started with a list of colleges that were included in both the Sierra Club's "Coolest Schools" list and the Sustainable Endowment Institute's "Sustainability Report Card." Then we combined each college's "Coolest Schools" score (45%), "Sustainability Report Card" score (45%), and College Prowler "Greenest Campus" rating (10%, as a measure of student opinion) to generate our total score.
