In some ways, the Iraq War’s progression has been starkly predictable. But as the U.S. occupation of Iraq grinds on into its eighth year, the future is far from clear. Thousands of lives, both military and civilian, have been lost since the war began in March 2003. The price tag has surpassed, by some estimates, the $3 trillion mark. While violence has dropped off sharply since the insurgency reached its height in 2006, attacks on Iraqis continue.
