As thousands of severely injured Iraq and Afghanistan vets return to the United States, the Pentagon is adopting some unconventional rehabilitation methods--and a new ‘body, mind, soul’ philosophy that focuses as much on restoring soldiers’ psyches as their battered bodies. One such program includes training amputees to take part in extreme sports that will build their muscles and, hopefully, restore their physical confidence. NEWSWEEK accompanied three wounded service members--U.S. Army Maj. Anthony Smith, U.S. Army Sp. Andrew Soule and U.S. Marine S/Sgt. Damion Jacobs--on a recreational therapy program that included white-water rafting, paragliding, rock climbing and horseback riding in Idaho last month.
