In 1991, when India was broke and faced economic collapse, finance minister Manmohan Singh's reforms opened the country to foreign trade and investment. This reversed 45 years of isolation and paved the way for an unprecedented economic boom. Thirteen years later, in 2004, Singh became prime minister, and since then he's put his reformer's stamp on the country's foreign and social policies as well. Despite Singh's successes, the Communist Party and its leader, Prakash Karat, pose a formidable challenge in upcoming elections.
