What can we learn from the animals who made the news in 2007? The grief over the death of race horse Barbaro, Leona Helmsley's $12 million bequest to her dog and Ellen DeGeneres's on-air meltdown showed just how much we can care about other creatures. The Michael Vick story, and the fact that New Mexico has only just gotten around to banning cockfighting, shows just how limited our empathy can be. Sometimes animals seem to be utterly at our mercy-think of birds caught in oil slicks and gorillas murdered for their habitat. The clairvoyant cat and the supersmart chimp, on the other hand, suggest that our furry cousins may be getting the upper hand.
