Brian Selznick won the 2008 Caldecott Award this week for a 533-page novel, even though the award is usually given to a picture book for kids. Ah, but “The Invention of Hugo Cabret” is a picture book. There’s a little text, sure, but mostly Selznick has told his story in pictures, like a movie. Which is apt, because the book is about movies (among other things) and filmlike and even features one of the very first people to ever make a film, George Melies, whose “A Trip to the Moon” (1902) is surely the very first sci-fi film classic. Here’s a sampling of the hundreds of images Selznick produced to tell his story.
