Being as they are the broccoli of the ad world, public service advertisements often require a little extra oomph to create an attention-getting spot that also convinces people to eat their vegetables. They often do that by shocking the living hell out of us, which studies have shown holds our attention and actually influences our behavior. Of course, some shock tactics can go too far, to the point where we're confused, disgusted--maybe even offended. In recent months, a number of provocative PSAs have struck that chord, creating a lively debate over the propriety and efficacy of such tactics. Some examples:
