Barbaro, galloping to the Kentucky Derby finish line six lengths ahead of the pack, was the star horse of 2006 and the popular favorite to end the Triple Crown drought. But he shattered three bones in his right hind leg just after the start of the Preakness. Barbaro spent the next eight months in and out of a support sling and was finally euthanized on Jan. 29, 2007, when the laminitis in his hooves grew too advanced for any possible recovery.
