Paul Newman's Life in Pictures
Hollywood icon Paul Newman once speculated that his epitaph might read, "Here lies Paul Newman, who died a failure because his eyes turned brown." But while his sparkling blue eyes were hard to forget, that's hardly all that Newman will be remembered for. In addition to picking up a string of Academy Award nominations for his work on-screen, the actor used his fame to start up a salad-dressing company in 1982 that has since donated more than $250 million—all of its profits after taxes—to charities. The Academy Award-winning star died Sept. 26 at age 83 near Westport, Conn., after a battle with cancer. Here, a look back at Newman's remarkable life, lived both in the Hollywood spotlight and on his own terms.
