The financial meltdown of 2008, and its fallout in 2009, have been called the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression. The downturn has claimed Washington Mutual, Lehman Brothers, AIG, Fannie and Freddie, and many other banks as casualties. Stock markets around the world plummeted, as governments rushed to the rescue. Of course, this isn’t the first time the economy's downward spikes have burst bubbles and wreaked havoc. Here, a look back at crises of years past, and some scenes from our latest economic storm.
