Since the modern Olympics began in 1896 in Athens, the international games have regularly been appropriated as a political megaphone. From propaganda in Nazi Germany to Mexican student protestors to a tragedy in Munich, athletic competition has strode hand-in-hand with opportunism, social struggle and, on more than one occasion, terrorism.
