While much of New York’s World Trade Center vaporized into dust on September 11, the steel guts of the Twin Towers largely survived--scarred and warped, but more or less in solid pieces. And since 2001, this iron alloy has become a symbol of the tragedy on the American psyche, and all that’s changed in the years that followed. Since then, portions of the steel beams have traversed the country, where they have been repurposed for memorials and dedications, flagpoles and artworks--long before New York City completes its own Ground Zero memorial. Here’s a look, from North Dakota to northern Italy, at the World Trade steel that’s traveled the world.
