Aid Crisis Looms in Ike's Wake
The rains have stopped. The wind has died down. And now, Texas is just beginning to grapple with the toll of Hurricane Ike. The state is undertaking one of the most costly storm recovery efforts in U.S. history. Homeland Security chief Michael Chertoff warns of "unpleasant surprises" ahead as search-and-rescue efforts proceed apace; so far more than 30 deaths have been attributed to Ike's ravages. Millions of people who evacuated from Galveston Island and the Gulf Coast are unsure when they will be allowed home. Nearly 3 million homes and businesses throughout the region are without power. As Federal Emergency Management Agency workers enter the region to offer aid and President Bush prepares to visit Tuesday, the area is in the grip of a humanitarian crisis. Here’s a look.
