The Faces of Economic Fear
If you thought the tumult of 2008 was past, think again. Even with economies stabilizing in some parts of the globe and indicators looking up, there’s still plenty of volatility in the market. During the spring of 2010, the Greek economy has gradually fallen apart, culminating in an April bailout from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund. But worries about whether the bailout was big enough and domestic protests over spending cuts have meant continued instability, and fears that it could spread to Portugal, Spain, or Ireland and from there the European Union and the world. On May 6, the Dow Jones Industrials Average sank nearly 1,000 points before staging a rebound and closing with a 348 point-loss. The Dow also had a bumpy ride May 7. Here’s a look at how the world’s traders are holding up in midst of dizzying market moves. At left a trader in Frankfurt, Germany watches indices on computer screens.
