In their long history, the Golden Globes have proved one infallible truth: television cameras plus free-flowing champagne can be a very fertile union. Despite the occasional downturn in viewership—the 2008 awards, reduced to a snooze-worthy press conference because of a writers’ strike, garnered a paltry 5.8 million viewers—the ceremony has regularly drawn as many as 20 million viewers.
